When we kicked off the hackathon, we had a world of possibilities in front of us. We could build anything we wanted, but we were intrigued by the challenge categories. Intel’s ‘Use AI’ category caught our eye with its promise of diving into the world of artificial intelligence. On the other hand, Frasers Group had an interesting challenge called ‘Obsess Over the Customer.’ This one was all about making sure whatever we built had a killer user experience, focusing on making things super easy and enjoyable for the ones using our product. With our team’s love for cool tech and a passion for making things user-friendly, we decided to take on the challenge and create something that not only rocked the AI aspect but also made users go “Wow, this is awesome!”
How do we address the challenge of 'Obsess Over the Customer' while also exploring AI capabilities?
As the 24-hour timer started, our team felt the urgency to choose an idea quickly. We wanted to make the most of every minute to start building. Someone brought up the idea of creating something to help people applying for jobs – something that would be useful for us soon as we graduate. Recognizing the importance of having a tailored CV in the job market, we swiftly settled on the idea of creating an AI-powered tool to assist with this task.
I also conducted interviews with fellow participants who, like us, were university students soon to graduate. These interviews aimed to gather qualitative data on their experiences and challenges in the job application process.
What we learned from the interviews:
Participants agreed with the importance of personalized CVs in standing out in a competitive job market.
There was a unanimous desire for a user-friendly tool to automate the CV-building process.
They would also like to see job listing in the tool to save time.
After thorough brainstorming, research, and discussions, our team finalized the idea for Matchify. We carefully considered what could be realistically developed within the limited time frame of the hackathon. As my teammates started with the back-end I started with the design, and o help them visualize the concept more clearly, I created sketches outlining the key features and functionalities of Matchify.
I created a design system to maintain consistency and aid the front-end developer in implementing the interface effectively.
Final Design
Upload your CV to Matchify for personalized job recommendations,
Search for your dream job with ease using Matchify’s intuitive job search feature.
Receive your tailored CV instantly, perfectly matched to the job you desire.
After completing the design phase and handing it over to the developer, I took the initiative to create presentation slides for Matchify. Though it wasn’t mandatory, I felt it would add a professional touch and greatly benefit our presentation.
Takeaways
Participating in HackNotts 84 with Matchify was a transformative experience. It was my first hackathon, and collaborating with developers taught me the value of teamwork and clear communication. Despite tight deadlines, we managed to think creatively and make informed design decisions swiftly.
Throughout the project, I gained valuable insights into the dynamics of interdisciplinary collaboration. We navigated uncertainties together, iterated on ideas, and delivered a product that resonated with both judges and participants. Winning the hackathon underscored the importance of collaboration and reinforced my passion for design.
Reflecting on this experience, I’m grateful for the opportunity to contribute to Matchify and collaborate with such talented individuals. It’s been an invaluable learning journey that has shaped my approach to future projects. I look forward to applying these lessons and continuing to grow as a designer.
